New authentication mechanisms are being developed to address ATM fraud. Evaluating these mechanisms requires considering factors such as speed, security, and memorability. Field studies and smaller follow-up studies were conducted to understand PIN-based ATM authentication and compare alternative methods. Contextual factors, including distractions, physical hindrances, trust relationships, and memorability, significantly influence security and performance in PIN-based ATM use. These findings have implications for designing alternative ATM authentication systems, emphasizing resilience to distractions and social compatibility.
