IRID Based Automatic Tollgate System Projects For Final Year Engineering Students

Introduction:

With the increase in the number of vehicles on the road, the task of traffic management becomes more complex. It is hard to keep & maintain the details of each vehicle, which is running on the road. Also in case of hit–and–run or carrying of illegal goods over inter-state cross-border or road-robbery cases, the police may not trace the culprits very easily, as the vehicle details are not monitored continuously. Suppose The Cargo Company wants to send a message to its On-road vehicle to stop delivering the goods to the customer, a policeman wants to stop a vehicle that is smuggling some illegal goods or city transports want to track each bus’s details such as departure and arrival time on bus terminal, number of round trips it has undergone in a single day. All this is possible by the use of automated toll gates. This system is intended to help the RTO, Police Department, Public Transport, and Cargo Companies to track the vehicles

Block diagram explanation :

Power supply unit:

This section needs two voltages viz., +12 V & +5 V, as working voltages. Hence specially designed power supply is constructed to get regulated power supplies.

Buffers:

Buffers do not affect the logical state of a digital signal (i.e. a logic 1 input results in a logic 1 output whereas logic 0 input results in a logic 0 output). Buffers are normally used to provide extra current drive at the output but can also be used to regularize the logic present at an interface.

Drivers:

This section is used to drive the relay where the output is the complement of input which is applied to the drive but the current will be amplified.

Relays:

It is an electromagnetic device that is used to drive the load connected across the relay and the o/p of the relay can be connected to the controller or load for further processing.

Indicator:

This stage provides a visual indication of which relay is actuated and deactivated, by glowing respective    LED or Buzzer.

  IR Receiver:

The Infra-Red signal [which contains each vehicle’s registration number in RC-5 code] transmitted by the moving vehicle is received by this IR Receiver.

PC with software & database:

The output of Buffer has enhanced decoded vehicle registration number, which is fed to PC’s port through the interface circuit. The software recognizes the decoded signal and starts scanning its database for the details. After fetching the details, it shows it in standard fashion on the screen for the operator’s knowledge. And also checks ‘Current Status of the vehicle: if the vehicle is blacklisted by any authority then marked as ‘dirty’; otherwise marked as ‘Clear’.

Methodology:

The first unit has a detector that detects the coming Vehicle, then the Transmitter source sends the ID (IR TX) signals, and the ID(IR RX) receiver sensor is placed at receiving end in a straight line at a particular distance from the recording station. So that ID signals from the source are falling straight on the sensor. Two such units are used, through buffer and decoder which indicates the PC.

The first unit is used to sense approaching vehicles whereas the second one will receive the ID signals and it will display them on the PC.

Advantages:

  1. This application is very useful in any place or area.
  2. This application is easy to install and easy to operate.
  3. Manpower can be saved.
  4. More reliable than a man.
  5. Proposed System Automatic collection of toll tax-Free flow of traffic.
  6. Time-saving. Record maintenance. Problems with pursuing toll evaders can be avoided.

Disadvantages:

  1. One-time investment cost.

Applications:

  1. This project is a very efficient tool for the automation of Toll Gate. It automatically identifies the vehicle and stores it in the record. Thus resulting in accuracy and efficiency.
  2. Since all the subscribed vehicles are detected well in advance and the gate is opened automatically, the drivers need not stop for Toll payments or even need not reduce their speed.
  3. The entire subscribed vehicle’s time is stored in the database. Even this can be used for theft and crime detection.
  4. This project can be used for other applications, like:
    1. Vehicle Tracking.
    2. Time Keeping.
    3. RTO Registration Detection &
    4. Theft Detection.
