Safety Device for Car Using MSP430 to Avoid Damage or Theft Projects For Final Year Engineering Students

Introduction:

Automotive theft has been a persisting problem around the world and greater challenge comes from professional thieves.

An anti-theft system is any device or method used to prevent or deter the unauthorized appropriation of items considered valuable. Theft is one of the most common and oldest criminal behaviors.

In recent years, vehicle thefts are increasing at an alarming rate around the world. People have started to use the theft control systems installed in their vehicles. The commercially available anti-theft vehicular systems are very expensive. Here, we make a modest attempt to design & develop a simple, low-cost vehicle theft control scheme using an inbuilt MSP 430 controller. This scheme involves a microcontroller(MSP 430 & a  buzzer).

Cars may require an anti-theft system for a variety of reasons

  • The car is expensive and/or has sentimental
  • The car is difficult/impossible to replace if lost
  • The car may be left unattended in an unsafe environment
  • Inappropriate use of the car may cause considerable damage or may enable further unauthorized acts (theft of car keys, stolen building access keys, identity theft)

Block Diagram Explanation:

Power supply unit

This section needs two voltages viz., +12 V & +5 V, as working voltages. Hence specially designed power supply is constructed to get regulated power supplies.

Tamper:

Tamper-evident describes a device or process that makes unauthorized access to the protected object easily detected.

4X4 Keypad:

A keypad is a set of buttons arranged in a block or “pad” which usually bears digits, symbols, and usually a complete set of alphabetical letters. If it mostly contains numbers then it can also be called a numeric keypad. Keypads are found on many alphanumeric keyboards and on other devices such as calculators, push-button telephones, combination locks, and digital door locks, which require mainly numeric input.

MSP 430 Microcontroller:

MSP low-power microcontrollers (MCUs) from Texas Instruments (TI) are RISC-based, mixed-signal processors that include smart analog and digital peripherals and offer several additional options such as low-power embedded RF and security such as AES encryption. MSP microcontrollers offer the ultimate solution for a wide range of low-power and portable applications.

Buffers

Buffers do not affect the logical state of a digital signal (i.e. a logic 1 input results in a logic 1 output whereas logic 0 input results in a logic 0 output). Buffers are normally used to provide extra current drive at the output but can also be used to regularize the logic present at an interface

Drivers

This section is used to drive the relay where the output is the complement of input which is applied to the drive but the current will be amplified.

Relays

It is an electromagnetic device that is used to drive the load connected across the relay and the o/p of the relay can be connected to the controller or load for further processing.

Buzzer:

A buzzer or beeper is an audio signaling device, which may be mechanical, electromechanical, or piezoelectric. Typical uses of buzzers and beepers include alarm devices, timers, and confirmation of user input such as a mouse click or keystroke.

DC motor:

A DC motor relies on the fact that magnet poles repel and unlike magnetic poles attract each other. A coil of wire with a current running through it generates an electromagnetic field aligned with the center of the coil. By switching the current on or off in a coil its magnetic field can be switched on or off or by switching the direction of the current in the coil the direction of the generated magnetic field can be switched 180°.

Indicator:

This stage provides a visual indication of which relay is actuated and deactivated, by glowing respective    LED or Buzzer.

Methodology:

This module consists of Tamper detection, a 4X4 keypad for password entry, MSP 430 controller unit, and the output.  If a person wants to open the door of a car first he should enter the password. That information will be given to MSP 430 and the controller will analyze the signal and activates the DC motor to open the car door if the password is correct. If the password is the wrong controller will activate the buzzer to indicate an unauthorized person is trying to open the door.

If Tamper detection detects the signal that directly activates the buzzer to indicate the process of the unauthorized person trying to access the protected object. Tamper detection is used to avoid damage from theft.

Advantages:

  1. Flexible and reliable.
  2. In this project losses are Minimal.
  3. This project can implement for the Security of supply.

Disadvantages:

  1. It increases the cost whereas digital systems reduce the cost of the system.
  2. High Cost.

Applications:

  1. This system can be implemented in industries.
  2. This system can be used to monitor and control home appliances.
  3. Where security is important there we can implement this project.
